Made in China
This afternoon IQ Beats team members Patrick Napper, Kip Beelman and Michael Berlin met director John Helde to discuss the details of a custom music commission he needs for his original documentary film Made in China.
Made in China uncovers a tale of an unusual American childhood as I search to understand my father’s past.
In 2002, I sit down with my father to try and understand his childhood as an American growing up in 1930′s China. I know very little of his past – he almost never talked about it; I’m also beginning to realize how little I know him. I hope to discover how the experience of growing up with a foot in two cultures, in a home that was never “home,” makes him who he is. We grow closer than we’ve ever been; and I propose a trip – thinking that by finding the places he once lived, we’ll share in this past together. But his death cuts short that possibility, and China falls to me alone. The journey across the country – from modern Shanghai to industrial Changsha to a rugged mountain in Western Sichuan – becomes as much a journey through a state of mind, with new friends as tour guides – an exploration of the meaning of home, what lasts, and what doesn’t.
– John Helde
The film has debuted at the 2007 Seattle International Film Festival to an enthusiastic audience and critical praise from The Seattle Times, Northwest Asian Weekly, and The Stranger. Patrick will be custom-creating an original composition to replace a song in preparation for worldwide distribution. We are excited to work with John on a film that is of great importance to him and has deep personal meaning… I guess in that sense, it is no different than custom-creating a radio jingle package for a PD with an anorak pedigree.┬á See ya in Cannes.
